The goal of creating more opportunities for future generations

I am the firstborn child of immigrant Ghanaian parents who came to Canada with the goal of giving their children more opportunities. I grew up watching my parents navigate the overwhelming and confusing Canadian financial marketplace. They struggled with language barriers, a lack of understanding of their specific needs and priorities, predatory lending, and the stress of making financial decisions which took a toll on the family. Despite their desire for me to become a medical professional, I knew that becoming a financial professional would better equip me to take advantage of the opportunities in Canada and avoid the financial struggles they faced.

Even as an Economics and Finance graduate, financial education alone is not enough for financial success

After earning a Honours Degree in economics and finance, I learned that formal financial education alone was not enough for financial success. Eventhough I was investing in a tax-sheltered account and lived below my means, I found that my net worth was decreasing. I lacked a robust personal finance plan and made a number of mistakes, such as using my credit card as emergency funds, buying high-risk investments with high fees, letting old collection accounts sit on my credit report, and loaning money I didn’t have to people who were in no position to pay me back. These mistakes among many others taught me that managing your personal finances is just as important as investing. The deepest lesson I struggled with was that I had a scarcity mindset that was feeding my shame around money because I believed my worth was measured by my financial security. I needed to change my money mindset and money habits. So I made some difficult financial decisions, including moving to Calgary for a few years to reset and get back on track.

Paying it forward by sharing my lessons and successes with others

My 10+ year career started with roles in debt collections, accounting, and personal and business tax. I later obtained my license as an Investment Representative and worked with employee share ownership plans and private wealth investors. Exclusively working with high net worth professionals and business owners in private wealth management exposed me to the sophisticated investing strategies they use to accumulate and preserve their financial assets and build generational wealth. I currently serve as the treasury of the board of directors of the Rexdale Community Health Centre and enjoy mentoring young women in the financial services industry. I am committed to paying it forward and making a positive impact.
